Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a method of
controlling indoor and outdoor pests using the least toxic methods
available through a combination of controls including mechanical,
biological and chemical. The Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution
Prevention Program (SCVURPPP), is educating the public in Santa Clara
County about the value of using less toxic methods of pest control and
providing them with resources to participate in IPM. |
 |
Thirty-five urban creeks in the San
Francisco Bay area, including San Francisco Bay, are polluted with the
pesticide Diazinon and are listed as impaired waterways by the
Environmental Protection Agency. The impairment of local waterways
has negative impacts on the environment, wildlife and human health.
In response to the pesticide
pollution of local waterways, many local government agencies have
developed, or are in the process of developing IPM programs.
SCVURPPP has implemented several IPM projects in Santa Clara County.
These projects include:
-
Offering training and workshop
opportunities about less toxic alternatives to pesticides for municipal
employees, pest control professionals, nursery
and hardware store employees
-
Participation in the Our Water Our
World (OWOW) program. OWOW literature is available to customers at
participating stores to
promote IPM practices. In
addition, a "point of sale" project is in place to encourage consumers
to buy less toxic alternatives to pesticides.
-
Coordinating with the Santa Clara
County Household Hazardous Waste Program to print IPM educational
materials for customers of the program
-
Support of IPM training through a community gardening
program administered by the Santa Clara County Master Gardeners
-
Initiating an IPM outreach program
to restaurants aimed at preventing pest infestations
